Milwaukee Area Technical College (MATC) is a public, two-year comprehensive technical college with campuses in downtown Milwaukee, Mequon, Oak Creek and West Allis. MATC was founded in 1912, and since then has grown to become one of the largest community-based technical colleges in the Midwest, with nearly 37,000 students and over 1,500 faculty and staff members.
Milwaukee Area Technical College had an interesting, and complex problem to solve. They had hired a development team to create their Career Pathways web-based application and had a prototype of the application when we entered the scene. The problem, however, was that it was not at all user-friendly. As you can see by this screenshot to the left, the project started off on an incredibly confusing foot.
Taking a step back, we went back to sketches and wireframes to rethink the structure of the app. Then we moved forward with some brand development and design elements to integrate into the system. We also developed some printed marketing materials and handouts for students.
Working alongside the college, and an external development team, we helped guide the strategy and direct the development and interaction design for the Career Pathways application. The results (below) have a much more logical flow and cohesive brand that students can interact with without much explanation.
